Bradford Group Enjoy the autumn sunshine in Murcia!

Eleven people from the Bradford area made a pilgrimage, with Cruz Tours, to Caravaca de la Cruz in September for the Feast of the Exaltation of the Cross. This feast day is a really spectacular event in Caravaca of which both religious and civic pomp meet. The group also enjoyed visits to the cave sanctuary of Our Lady of Hope in Calaspara, The House of Christ in the mountains of Moratalla, to the magnificent Franciscan shrine to 2nd century Spanish Roman Saint, Saint Eulalia and a of course a full guided tour of Caravaca de la Cruz.

The group was mainly from the parishes of the Immaculate Conception and St. Francis of Assisi and was organised by Christine and Tony Blakley. The six day tour was thoroughly enjoyed by all who attended and they enjoyed some splendid weather during their stay at the Discalced Carmelite Friary in Caravaca de la Cruz. Most of the group have pledged that they hope to organise another trip for next year, possibly for Holy Week or for Caravaca’s magnificent fiestas.

The picture shows the group at the giant statue of the Sacred Heart in Totana.

Spain V Bosnia

The boys and I went to see Spain V Bosnia last Saturday night (06/09/08). It was the first game Spain played back on home soil since winning the Euro 08 Championship. It was a great occasion; however the actual game could have been better. 5 buses went from Caravaca de la Cruz (approximately 250 people) to the game which was played in the new Real Murcia FC stadium the Nueva Condomina in Murcia. Spain won 1 -0 to get their World Cup campaign off to a winning start with a goal from David Villa. Villa’s goal made amends for a first half penalty that he missed. I have written a full match report which is to appear in a future edition of Newcastle United supporters fanzine true faith www.true-faith.co.uk

At the game we met the famous bar owner from Valencia Manolo el del bombo (see photo), Manolos bar doubles up as a sports museum and due to his frequent travels in support of Valencia and Spain and his unwillingness to let others run the bar he has suffered financial losses. He has also lost his family, who he found gone upon returning from a match in 1987, a very committed guy!!
